Answer:

cost of each kettle:

  • K₁ = 650
  • K₂ = 975

gain/loss from each transaction:

  • gain from selling K₁ = 130
  • loss from selling K₂ = 195

total loss = 65

loss % = 4%

Explanation:

both kettles cost 1625

K₁ + K₂ = 1625

selling price of K₁ = [(100 + 20) / 100] x K₁ = 1.2K₁

selling price of K₂ = [(100 - 80) / 100] x K₂ = 0.8K₂

1.2K₁ = 0.8K₂

K₁ = 1625 - K₂

K₁ = 0.8K₂ / 1.2

1625 - K₂ = ²/₃K₂

1625 = ²/₃K₂ + K₂ = ⁵/₃K₂

K₂ = 1625 x ³/₅ = 975

K₁ = 1625 - K₂ = 1625 - 975 = 650

selling price = 1.2K₁ = 1.2 x 650 = 780

selling price K₂ = 0.8K₂ = 0.8 x 975 = 780

gain from selling K₁ = 780 - 650 = 130

loss from selling K₂ = 780 - 975 = 195

total loss = 195 - 130 = 65

loss % = 65 / 1625 = 0.04 = 4%
