The heat from a burning fire, the light from the sun, the X-rays used by your doctor, as well as the energy used to cook food in a microwave are all forms of electromagnetic radiation. Electromagnetic waves can bring energy into a framework by the power of their electric and magnetic fields. Electric fields contribute to the movement of electromagnetic energy when they exert forces and move charges. Magnetic fields partake in the movement of energy in electromagnetic waves through doing the same. The electric and magnetic fields that make up an electromagnetic wave are perpendicular to each other. Both fields are also perpendicular to the direction that the wave travels. This explains why electromagnetic waves are transversal waves.
