At the end of a snow storm, Emily saw there was a lot of snow on her front lawn. The

temperature increased and the snow began to melt at a steady rate. There was a depth
of 15 inches of snow on the lawn when the storm ended and after 4 hours, the depth
of snow was down to 12 inches. Write an equation for S, in terms of t, representing
the depth of snow on Emily's lawn, in inches, t hours after the snow stopped falling.

Answer:

y = (4)/(3)x + 15

Explanation:

•First we must find out how many inches of snow melted so we can find the slope.

15 inches - 12 inches = 3 inches

•The snow melts 3 inches every 4 hours. This statement can be rewritten as:

(4)/(3)

•We know that the snow started at 15 inches so that will be our y-int.

•Now we can start combining these terms to create an equation.

m = (4)/(3)

b = 15

•All we have to do is substitute these terms for the corresponding variables.

y = mx +b
y = (4)/(3)x + 15

y = (4)/(3)x + 15
