In chapter five, Ponyboy says that Dally is too "real" for him, this reveals something about himself. He mentioned earlier that he was a lot more comfortable with people like Darry, Two-Bit, and Soda because they remind him more of heroes in books. This reveals that Ponyboy is more comfortable with fictional heroes, then with people in real life. This is important to the novel because it is another stage of character development for Pony and Johnny.
