EASY POINTS. "We were the masters of nature, the masters of the world. We had transcended everything death, fatigue, our natural needs. We were stronger than cold and hunger, stronger than the guns and the desire to die, doomed and rootless, nothing but numbers, we were only men on earth" Why was this quote hopeless and what do you think Elie is trying to say what happened to the men mentally as a result of their experiences

Answer:

This quote is hopeless because it describes a strength from despair. But in reality things are going horribly and this sentence is said to mask the truth. Also, he is trying to say that his men have started lying to themselves about hope to continue moving forward.
