Remark

This question is a little ambiguous. You might not be sure how to treat the Chiefs. Include their 10 or not. Turns out you do.

So the total score was 45

But this can be solved without using that information. The key is that the total number of plays made was 13

Givens

Let the touchdowns = x

Let the point after = y

Let the field goals = z

The number of point afters = the touchdowns. x = y

The number of touchdowns is 6 times the field goals: z = x / 6

Equation.

x + y + z = 13 Substitute x for y

Solution

x + x + z = 13 Combine the left: substitute x/6 for z

2x + x/6 = 13 Multiply by 6 to get rid of the fraction

6*2x + x = 13 * 6 Combine the left

12x + x = 13*6 Combine the left

13x = 13 * 6 Divide by 13 on both sides.

13x/13 = 6

x = 6

====================

Answer

x = 6

y = 6

z = 1

Check

It's time to see what happened.

6 touchdowns = 6 * 6 = 36

6 single points = 6 * 1 = 6

1 field goal = 3

Total 45

Apparently we got the right answer. You made one small error in the last equation. z should equal x/6

Very interesting problem. Sports stat guys are going to love this question. Thanks for posting.
