The Velasco treaty signed in 1836 by a war prisoner of Mexican origin, General Antonio Lopex de Santa Anna was not approved by the Mexican government, but the United States capitalized on it to say that the republic of Texas belonged to them. President James Polka used both peaceful and aggressive means to recover that territory. His peace negotiations were rejected by Mexico and despite that, he sent troops to occupy the territory.

They also occupied other territories of Mexico like Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico. The Mexicans saw this as provocative and sent their soldiers to Texas who ended up killing 11 American soldiers. This resulted in the war that was fought between 1846 to 1848.
