A wire is in the shape of square of side 12cm. if the wire is rebent into a

rectangle of length 14cm, find its breadth. Which figure encloses more area

Breadth = 10 cm.

Difference in area = 4 cm^2 ( the square encloses more area).

Explanation:

The perimeter of the square = 4*12 = 48 cm.

If the length of the rectangle is 14 then

2*14 + 2b = 48 where b is the breadth.

28 + 2b = 48

2b = 20

b = 10 cm.

A square encloses more area than a rectangle for a given length of wire.

Area of the square = 12^2 = 144cm^2 and

area of the rectangle = 14*10 = 140 cm^2.
