The selling price for each shirt would be 8 dollars.

Explanation:

10% of $20 is 2 and to make a whole would be 10% x 10 = 100%

so 2 x 10 = 20

we could break this down to 2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2=20

we know that one 2 is 10% so to make 40% we need 4.

4 x 2 = 8
