An equation can be made from the question.

No matter what, you will always have to pay $3.95. So, this will add on to any amount that you pay for staying at the rink.

But, we don’t know how many hours we stayed.

So, the cost of renting the skates for each additional hour will be multiplied by x.

This is our equation.

y = 1.25x + 3.95

Now, we are told that the total we paid, or our y value, is $7.70.

So, plug that in for y and then solve for x.

7.70 = 1.25x + 3.95

Subtract 3.95 from both sides

3.75 = 1.25 x

Divide both sides by 1.25 to isolate x

x = 3

We skated for an additional 3 hours.
