Japan culture was highly influenced by China. This is shown in the writing style of both Japan and China. If you look closely at both writing styles, you will notice some similarities. Japan was also influenced by Chinese culture. Buddhism was brought over to Japan through China and Korea in the year 552. Out of the three branches of Buddhism, it was the Mahayana which first became rooted in the Japanese culture.

Basically, both influenced each other greatly in becoming the nations they are today.
