From an airplane at an altitude of 1700 m, the angle of depression to a rock on the ground measures 25 degrees. Find the distance from the plane to the rock. Give your answer correct to 1 dp.

The set up will give a right angled triangle;

altitude (opposite side ) = 1700m

angle of depression = 25degrees

Required

distance from the plane to the rock (adjacent side)

Using the SOH, CAH, TOA identity;

According to TOA

tan 25 = opposite/adjacent

tan25 = 1700/adj

adj = 1700/tan 25

adj = 1700/0.4663

adj = 3,645.72m

Hence the distance from the plane to the rock to 1 dp is 3,645.7m
