Explanation:

4x + y = 27 → (1)

5x - y = 18 → (2)

adding the 2 equations term by term will eliminate y

9x + 0 = 45

9x = 45 ( divide both sides by 9 )

x = 5

substitute x = 5 into either of the 2 equations and solve for y

substituting into (1)

4(5) + y = 27

20 + y = 27 ( subtract 20 from both sides )

y = 7

solution is (5, 7 )
