1. First, find the area of the bigger (shaded) rectangle

4 x 3 = 12m²

2. Then, find the area of the door (white rectangle)

2 x 1 = 2m²

3. Because you are only finding the area of the shaded section, you need to subtract the area of the door from the shaded section

12m² - 2m² = 10m²
