3x+5=2x+7 this is the original equation

since we have no clue as to what x could be, we just take a guess.

lets say we used 3.

we would plug in 3 where the x's are and get

3(3)+5=2(3)=7

three times three is 9, 9 plus 5 is 14.

2 times 3 is 6, 6 plus 7 is 13.

since these numbers do not match, 3 cannot be the answer.

if you did these same steps with the number two, you would get 11 as the answer for both, therefore, x=2

3(2)+5 2(2)+7

6 +5=11 4+7=11
