He wants to let them know that the Indians would be ideal people to convert to the Catholic faith and serve their God. His view is problematic because he demeans them by calling them weak and complacent. Maybe the author's intentions were good, but he's demeaning the Indians and forcing them to leave their sacred faith for another. This kind of view led to colonization and marching Indians out of their native territory.
