George hiked from the top of a hill to the valley floor. The elevation at the top of the hill is 127 feet above sea level. The valley floor is 52 feet below sea level. George stopped at a rest stop that is at an elevation exactly halfway between the top of the hill and the valley floor. What is the elevation, in feet, of the rest stop? I need someone to also explain how they got the answer ;-;

Answer:

Halfway = 37.5 --- above the sea level

Explanation:

Given

Top = 127ft --- above sea level

Valley\ Floor = 52ft --- below sea level

Required

Determine the elevation at half way

To do this, we simply add the elevations of the top of the hill and the valley floor.

Then calculate the average by dividing the sum by 2

Total = Top + Valley\ Floor

Total = 127 + (-52)

Note that the negative sign represents below sea level

Total = 127 -52

Total = 75

At half way, the elevation is:

Halfway = (1)/(2) * Total

Halfway = (1)/(2) * 75

Halfway = 37.5 --- above the sea level
