Firstly, you have to count the number of squares in the shape. As it can been seen from the diagram, there are a total 18 squares (i.e 6 squares on each row × 3 squares on each column).

Secondly you have to find 1/6 of the total number of the squares in the shape. 1/6 of the total number of the square in the shape = 1/6 × 18 = 3 squares

Therefore 3 squares would have to be shaded so that 1/6 of the shape is shaded
