Ok sorry about my inaccurate answer earlier, if no one has answered you I think I have an answer. He is talking about the Lord.

I read some of his speech and it shows him talking about the Lord (God/Jesus) and how the Lord was once alone and had few followers but rose to become greatness quickly. He compares himself to God/Jesus. Then says "the death upon the Cross." which could be him referring to the Lord on the Cross when he died.
