Answer:

12 miles less

Explanation:

18+24=42

If you walk in a L shape you walk 42 miles

If you walk diagonally:

ABC Right triangle

We have A and B (18 and 24)

Using the pythagorum theorem

a^2+b^2=c^2

18^2+24^2=C^2

324+576=C^2

900=C^2

Square root of 900=C

30=C

You would walk 30 miles

42-30=12

By walking diagonally, you would walk 12 miles less than going all the way around.

Answer:

18² + 24² = x²

900 = x²

x = 30

18 + 24 = 42

42 - 30 = 12

Its shorter for 12 miles
