Euglena perform photosynthesis through the presence of chloroplasts in their cells, but they are also able to feed like animals by consuming and digesting organic material. They have features of both an autotroph(an organisms that produces its own food, such as plants) and a heterotroph (an organism that can not produce its own food and instead need to consume organic matter). Due to having features associated with both plants and animals, this would cause confusion to the scientists at the time who struggled to classify them as either plant or animal.
