Answer:

y= -2

x = 5

Explanation:

Multiply the top equation by 2 to get

2x + 6y = -2

then subtract the bottom equation by the new equation to get

2x + 6y = -2

--------------------

2x + 2y = 6

which is

4y = -8

y = -2

If y = -2

Then plug -2 into y in the top equation to get x + 3(-2) = -1 and simplify which is

x + (-6) and add 6 to both sides to get x = -1 + 6

which is x = 5
