Final answer:

A film review in an English class is an analytical piece that goes beyond stating an opinion, involving a substantive look at the film's production, context, and significance, grounded with supporting evidence. It showcases the student's ability to present a well-argued thesis based on a detailed critique of key aspects of the film.

Step-by-step explanation:

In the context of English and specifically the realm of critical writing, the student is tasked to undertake a review of a primary media source. An insightful film review, as suggested in the provided reference material, should encompass not just an opinion, but a well-grounded analysis, often factoring in the sociohistorical context in which the film was produced. One of the examples provided is Black Panther, a film rich in cultural context that may serve as an interesting subject of discussion for this kind of assignment.

When crafting a film review, the student should present a thesis that captures their overall judgment of the film, supported by a concentrated analysis of key elements like direction, acting, cinematography, and narrative among others. It is essential to provide credible evidence to back up this judgment. Engaging with different methods of reviews, such as those seen on Rotten Tomatoes or star ratings on various platforms, can guide the student in forming their evaluative criteria.

The assignment requires a balance between objective analysis and subjective response, encouraging the reviewer to delve deeper than a surface-level critique. It is not simply a summary or a statement of like or dislike; rather, the review should reflect the nuanced understanding of both the production and its wider implications or contributions to its genre or society. The ability to distill these insights into a few pivotal observations will demonstrate the student's capacity to synthesize complex information and articulate a persuasive argument.

Movie: Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler is undoubtedly one of my all-time favorite movies out there. I, personally enjoy physiological movies, and movies that fit under the genre horror/thriller. Nightcrawler meets all the requirements. It keeps you on the edge of your seat most of the time, and the protagonist's twisted, sociopathic personality makes the film a whole lot better in my opinion. Ever since I watched Nightcrawler, all the other movies out there seem bland and boring. Whenever someone would ask me, "What's your favorite movie?" I wouldn't be able to respond due to the amount of movie's I have found enjoyable. However, now I'm able to respond without hesitation. This spine-chilling film is definitely a must if you find thriller and physiological movies entertaining.

hope this was good enough! <3
