Isaiah and his children went into a grocery store and he bought $10 worth of apples and bananas. Each apple costs $2.50 and each banana costs $0.50. He bought a total of 8 apples and bananas altogether. By following the steps below, determine the number of apples, x,x, and the number of bananas, y,y, that Isaiah bought.

Answer:

x=3

y=5

Explanation:

x+y=8

x=8-y

2.5(8-y)+0.5y=10.00

20-2.5y+0.5y=10.00

20-2y=10

-2y=-10

-y=5

y=5

Replace y with 5:

x+y=8

x+5=8

x=3
