I think that the author is using Logos and Ethos.

Logos: An appeal to logic.

Ethos: An appeal based upon the reputation or experiences.

I think he appealed to Ethos from this part of the passage, "when I was your age" this is based off of experiences.

I think he appealed to Logos because the author includes facts and logic in this passage. Such as, "The study of the rights and duties of citizens is called civics" and "only nine sates require students to have a full year of it in scool".

I think the author used them booth equally.
