Answer:

There were 3 main reasons. One was that America was helping Cuba to become independent of Spain. The second reason was because upon arival to Spain, the U.S.S. Maine (one of Americas ships) blew up in one of Spains harbors, and was associated with foul play on the behalf of Spain. The third reason was Yellow Journalism (defined by google as "journalism that is based upon sensationalism and crude exaggeration.")

The main issue was Cuban independence. Revolts had been occurring for some years in Cuba against Spanish rule. The U.S. later backed these revolts upon entering the Spanish–American War.
