Answeer: One theme from this could be that you should noyt judge a book by its cover. The dog only has 3 legs and that is upsetting to the boy at first glance. Then the viewr learns that so does the boy. We can assume he did not like the sympathy his mom was giving him at first but then realized the dog was like him and fell in love with it.
