Plato: Currently, we can’t predict earthquakes. We can only measure their magnitude and location at the time that they occur. The equipment to measure earthquakes needs to be buried deep underground and is very expensive. Scientists haven’t developed an earthquake warning system yet because earthquakes give little warning. So there is no reliable way to predict when an earthquake will hit.

Reliable predictions require precursors – some kind of signal in the earth that indicates a big quake is on the way. The signal has to happen only before large earthquakes and it has to occur before all big quakes.
