A clerical worker takes 2 times as long to finish a job as it does an executive secretary. Working​ together, it takes them 6 hr to finish the job. How long would it take the clerical​ worker, working​ alone, to finish the​ job?

Step one:

given data

let the secretary take x hours to finish one job

so the clerical worker will take 2x hours to finish one job.

Both of them working together will take 6 hours

Step two:

The combined work formula is

T/A+T/B=1

Where T= time working together

A= time the Clerical worker spent alone

B= time the secretary spent alone

substituting we have

6/2x+6/x=1

solve for x

6+12/2x=1

18/2x=1

9/x=1

cross multiply

x=9 hours

the clerical worker take 2x hours

2*9= 18 hours
