Why was the popular vote a concern to the southern states?

Answer:

Southern states tend to be more rural than Northern states, so popular vote does not help them. Any system that helps rural areas be more equal with urban areas helps the South, like the electoral college or the Senate. However, if the government was based solely on popular vote Northern states (along with a few populous southern states) would likely control the government.
