In Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" Marc Anthony admits near the end that "Brutus was the noblest Roman of them all". What he meant was that Brutus was the only one of both the assasins and the ones that avenged Caesar's death that didn't have a selfish motive. He didn't want to kill Caesar but the other conspiritors convinced him that Caesar was a dictator and had to be eliminated. Brutus was the only major person in the play that had a conscience.
