8/√2 doesn't reduce to an integer. It will give you 4*√2 * √2/√2 = 4√2

-√18/√2 = -√(3*3*2)/√2 = -3(√2)/√2 = -3

At best you will get 4√2 - 3

a = 4√2

b = - 3

b is correct. the answer for b = -3

a can't be done giving an integer answer. My best guess is 4 but that is not the correct answer. You could write it as (4 - 3)√2

My advice to you is to present it to your instructor and see what he/she comes up with.
