Sumerians had quite developed technology and have managed to invent a few things we still use today. The wheel is one of their inventions that came out of their other innovation - the pottery wheel. The heavy spinning disk was spun horizontally so the potter can make the jugs, bowls, and plates out of the clay.
For the wheel we know of today, they had to experiment for some time, using the logs first. By realizing they only needed oval shapes at the end of the load in order to carry it, they engineered what we know today as the wheel, used on the moving objects. At the time, they mostly used it on the two-wheel chariot.
