A 80-kg man is standing on a scale in a 1120kg elevator that is traveling upward by a single cable. The scale measures 1000 N. (a) Draw a FBD of both the elevator and the man (b) What are the magnitude and direction of the acceleration of the elevator? (c) What is the tension on the cable

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

a ) see attached file

b )

weight of man = 80 x 10 = 800 N

scale reading = 1000N .

Since scale reading is more than his weight , the elevator must be moving upwards .

Net force upwards = R - mg , R = reaction force = 1000N

Net force upwards = 1000 - 800 = 200 N

acceleration = net force / mass

= 200 / 80 = 2.5 m / s²

c )

If T be the tension

T - ( 80 + 1120 ) g = ( 80 + 1120 ) x 2.5

T = 15000 N
