Project 2- Problem #1
Coffee Table
One of the pieces of the required furniture in your room is a coffee table. Now let's have some fun figuring out how big it needs to be.
This will be a rectangular coffee table.
Here is the math part:
If the length of the coffee table is 8 more than twice the width and the total area is 960 square inches, find the length and width of the
rectangular coffee table. Hint: Draw a picture, label both sides, and write an equation to find the area (length width = area) Use the
information you just learned in the earlier steps of the project to solve this.
****Your work is going to be scored, make sure it is neat!!! Take a picture of it when you are done and SAVE THE PAPER you wrote it on.

Answer:

l=48, w=20

Let the width of the table be w feet, then the length will be:

l = 2w+8

The area of the table is 960 square feet.

This means that:

w(2w+8)=960

Expand and rewrite in standard form to get:

2w^2+8w-960=0

w^2+4w-480+0

w^2+24w-20w-480=0

w(w+24)-20(w+24)=0

Factor to get:

(w+24)(w-20)+0

w= -24 or w=20
