UPS charges $7 for the first pound, and $0.20 for each additional pound. FedEx charges $5 for the first pound and $0.30 for each additional pound. How many pounds, p, will it take for UPS and FedEx to cost the same?

Please help and show the work for this!

Answer: it will take 20 pounds and then they are equal: Answer 20 pounds

Explanation:

So you first have to find a method to solve the problem here I recommend guess and check.

Then for UPS you would have to take the first 7.00 they charge for the first pound and add that to the additional 0.20 cents they charge per pound after. To get that you would take 0.20 times the pounds your charging (which is 20) and do 0.20 times 20 which equals = 4.00 dollars which you would add to the first pound price of 7.00 dollars getting 11 dollars as the total price for 20 pounds.

For FedEx you would have to take the first 5.00 dollars they charge for the first pound and add that to the additional 0.30 cents they charge per pound after. To get that you would take 0.30 times the pounds your charging (which is 20) and do 0.30 (cents) times 20 (pounds) which gives you the additional 6.00 dollars for the other 19 pounds, then you would add that to the first pound price of 5.00 dollars getting 11 dollars as the total price for 20 pounds.
