That's the official definition. Basically... the reciprocal is whatever value you are working with... but the numerator and denominator are switched. Remember that if you are working with a whole number/ value... it is still a fraction divided by 1. For example, the number 6 is the same as 6/1. Another example would be x is the same as x/1. Knowing this, the reciprocal of x (which is x/1) is 1/x
