irrational numbers are numbers that cannot be expressed as a quotient of 2 numbers

rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as a fraction.

for example let's take these examples of iirational numbers:


√(2) * √(2) = 2


\pi * \pi = 9.86960....

the 1st product (2) can be written as a fraction but the second one cannot be written as a fraction
