It is important to cite textual evidence to back up your - or the author's - claim. If evidence is not provided when you are making a claim, then the argument is weaker. Citing provides a stronger backup, and explains why your claim is true. Without citing proper evidence, an argument is not as appealing, and is less likely to be read/believed.
