Answer:

Blue car = 28.4 miles per gallon

Red car = 34 miles per gallon

Explanation:

You are running a fuel economy study. One of the cars you find is blue. can travel 35 1/2 miles on 1 1/4 gallons of gasoline. Another car is red. It can travel 27 1/5 miles on 4/5 gallons of gasoline.

What is the unit rate for miles per gallon for each car?

Blue car:

Travels 35 1/2 miles on 1 1/4 gallons of gasoline

Miles per gallon of the blue car = Total miles / total gallons

= 35 1/2 miles ÷ 1 1/4 gallons

= 71 / 2 miles ÷ 5/4 gallons

= 71/2 × 4/5

= 284 / 10

= 28.4 miles per gallon

Red car:

Travels 27 1/5 miles on 4/5 gallons of gasoline

Miles per gallon of the red car = Total miles / total gallons

= 27 1/5 miles ÷ 4/5 gallons

= 136 / 5 ÷ 4/5

= 136/5 × 5/4

= 136 / 4

= 34 miles per gallon
