Answer:

x ≈ $1139

Explanation:

Let the initial amount he had in his savings account be x.

He spent 198 on a radio.

Amount left = x - 198

He spent 4/11 of this remaining amount on presents for his friends.

Amount left = (7/11)(x - 198)

Now, he put 2/9 of remaining money into a checking account and 980 which is left to charity.

Thus total is;

(2/9)[(7/11)(x - 198)] + 980

This should equal the amount he had initially in the account which we said is x.

Thus;

x = (2/9)[(7/11)(x - 198)] + 980

x = (14/99)(x - 198) + 980

Multiply through by 99 to get;

99x = 14x - 198 + (980 × 99)

99x - 14x = 97020 - 198

85x = 96822

x = 96822/85

x ≈ $1139
