If a character is only superficial, readers will not feel as if they know him. And it is difficult to care about someone we do not know well. However, when an author takes time to properly develop a character, readers get to truly know him. His feelings, emotions, issues, traits, traumas and so on are all built and revealed in a way that makes readers close to this person. We begin to care about him, to worry about what will happen to him, to root for him - or, in some cases, against him. It's as if the character becomes important, now that we know him so well, to the point of engaging us.
