However, when an author takes time to properly develop a character, readers get to truly know him. His feelings, emotions, issues, traits, traumas and so on are all built and revealed in a way that makes readers close to this person. We begin to care about him, to worry about what will happen to him, to root for him - or, in some cases, against him. It's as if the character becomes important, now that we know him so well, to the point of engaging us.
