Given

(x - 2)² - 3 = 1 ( add 3 to both sides )

(x - 2)² = 4 ( take the square root of both sides )

x - 2 = ±
√(4) = ± 2 ( add 2 to both sides )

x = 2 ± 2

Thus

x = 2 - 2 = 0

x = 2 + 2 = 4
