How did most colonists feel about separating from Great Britain

Most colonists at the beginning were not supporting any type of separation from Britain. What they wanted was their political rights to be improved, but not to create and independent country. This idea actually started spreading during the revolution, while even after the proclamation of independence, there were still a lot of Loyalists who were fighting on the side of Britain.

Colonists in 13 colonies were supporting British government in many, including the French and Indian war. Although Britain won the war, the situation for the colonists was worse than ever. Many taxes and different acts that were imposed were met with resistance among them. Still, colonists weren't thinking much about creation of independent country. Their idea was to be represented in British Parliament and this impositions to be removed. But later, with ideas of the Founding Fathers the situation changed.
