At the beginning of the year, Savannah had $3o in savings and saved an additional

$16 each week thereafter. Jacob started the year with $55 and saved $11 every week.
Let S represent the amount of money Savannah has saved t weeks after the
beginning of the year and let J represent the amount of money Jacob has saved t
weeks after the beginning of the year. Write an equation for each situation, in terms
oft, and determine the amount of money Savannah and Jacob have saved in the
week that they have the same amount of money saved.

Answer:

  • S = 30 +16t
  • J = 55 +11t
  • $110

Explanation:

The y-intercept in the equation is the initial amount in savings. The slope is the amount saved per week.

S = 30 +16t

J = 55 +11t

__

These are equal when ...

30 +16t = 55 +11t

5t = 25 . . . . . . . . subtract 30+11t

t = 5

S = 30 +16·5 = 30 +80 = 110

After 5 weeks, both Savannah and Jacob will have saved $110.
