James Monroe was the 5th president of the United States. He was born April 28, 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was chosen as a Virginia representative to the Congress of the Confederation in 1782. In 1808, he ran for president against Madison, but lost. He ran for president in 1816 as a Democratic-Republican and won. He was sworn into office on March 4, 1817. In 1825, Monroe left office and retired in Virginia. He died on July 4, 1831
