Explanation:

Just add like terms:

(f + g)(x) = 3x - 1 + x^2 + 1. Notice that you must use " ^ " or equivalent to denote exponentiation.

(f + g)(x) = 3x - 1 + x^2 + 1 = x^2 + 3x + 1 - 1
