His teachings are summarized as the Four Noble Truths:

"The truth of pain"-- birth, old age, sickness, death, despair;

"The truth of the cause of pain"-- craving for existence, passion, and so forth, that lead to rebirth;

"The truth of cessation of pain" - by renunciation; and

"The truth of the way that leads to the cessation of pain" called the Middle Path.
