Lea's school is selling tickets to the annual talent show. On the first day of ticket sales the school sold 12 adult tickets and 7 child tickets for a total of $236. The school took in $217 on the second day by selling 7 adult tickets and 14 child tickets. What is the price each of one adult ticket and one child ticket?

and

equating both 1 and 2 we have

7x+12y=236-----1

14x+7y=217------2

multiply 1 by 2

subtract 2 from 1 we have

14x+24y=472-----3

- 14x+7y=217------2

0x+17y=255

17y=255

y=255/17

y=15

put y=15 in eqn 1 we have

7x+12y=236-----1

7x+12*15=236-----1

7x+180=236-----1

7x=236-180

7x=236-180

x=56/7

x=8

therefore a child will cost $8 and adult will cost $15
