Explanation:

You know that y goes down -3 for every 1 that x moves (just rise/run)

So to get from (-1,8) to (4,-7) you will have to add 5 to the x (-1+5 = 4)

and since you are moving over 5 along the x, you have to move 5(-3) = = -15 units on the y axis. (-1+5) = 4 and (8-15) = -7.
